It's not the price of gasoline that's so expensive in Europe, it's the price
of taxes, they pay about the same for crude oil that the U.S. does. It's
their own government that's ripping them off, something for Americans to
remember when you vote next November.

Indeed we do pay more in tax than on t'other side of the pond. Of course, there
is the point that we aren't paying too much (tax money has to come from
somewhere to provide public services and things like our National Health
Services) and there is an argument that has some merit that on the American
side of the pond, you are paying too little, especially in terms of paying for
the cost of damage to the world-wide environment in terms of climate change.

  2. Just a point to note. About 10-12 years ago the big 3 started a joint
venture R&D effort called USCAR. It was supposed to come up with the
definition of the US car of the future - fuel efficient, environmentally
acceptable and lots of other things. They studied fuel cells, methanol,
ethanol, natural gas, propane, hydrogen, etc, and do you know what they came
    up with?

    Diesel

An awesome solution except for a few minor details - 1. still leaves America
dependent on the same old sources of energy. 2. In spite of best available
emisson control technologies, the public doesn't like the smell.

Where is USCAR today - anybody know?

I'm sure glad my bike emits only mud emissions. And even then, only on
    certain trails.

    ;-)

Anyone uses bike going to work??? Gas price is all time time now.
Perhpas it's best time to ride bicycle to work.
I don't know if a car addicted American can leave their addiction at
    home
and ride bicycle. About 20% of Americans people are physically unable
to ride bicycle because they are too fat.

I commute by bike every day and have for years, even when gas was much
cheaper. With the air quality around here (southern California) I wish

    that

    Quoted message said:

a lot more people commuted by bicycle.

I hope that gas prices continue to rise. I'd like to see the day when not
everybody is driving an extra large gas guzzling truck just to commute to
work or go buy groceries. I especially hate smelly diesels. Why do they
seem to be so popular now?

    Jeff

  3. oooo I think Helen has got you there. What do you want cheap gas or a future
    planet for your prodigy?

As usual us Canadians are in the middle - our gas prices are higher than US
and lower than UK. Never can make up our minds who we want to more like . .
    ..

As someone who is in the energy business I think its too cheap and not so
oil patch can make more money. Its too cheap because its irreplaceable, it
causes harmful emissions, it renders us dependent on foreign countries with
their political instabilities, it makes us fat and lazy and none of this is
reflected in the prices we are paying today.

Maybe there are more issues than just price to think about at election time.

Are you suggesting that the US is somehow responsible for climate change?

    solved?

  5. Quoted message said:

Are you suggesting that the US is somehow responsible for climate change?

Yes. It is the biggest producer of greenhouse gas emissions in the world. These
do not just affect America they affect the entire globe. This is not to say the
rest of the planet has no responsibility to reduce such emissions, but the
biggest culprit is the USA, sadly. The fact that Bush will not ratify the Kyoto
Treaty does not help America and it doesn't help the rest of us. Already one of
the effects of global climate change - that of rising sea-levels - is causing
many of the smaller island states in the Pacific to make plans to abandon their
    lands as they become submerged.

    Quoted message said:

And do you think that by Americans paying more taxes this problem will be
    solved?

Well, one possible effect is to help reduce the American love affair with oil,
cheap fuel and the car and move to more efficient, renewable sources of energy
that do not produce greenhouse gas emissions the same way that burning oil
does. By making fossil fuels more expensive, it can help make more
environmentally-friendly options more attractive to use.

This is not to say the rest of the world is perfect & America is some awful big
bad monster, but a lot of the responsibility currently does rest on American
shoulders. Nor does it mean I hate America or Americans by the way :-)

What are these efficient, renewable sources of energy? Don't tell me wind
and solar, they don't meet the definition of efficient. Nuclear??

FYI, I have an automobile that gets 40 American miles to 1 U.S. gallon of
fuel, and a small truck that gets 22 mpg and is rated as a "Low Emmision
Vehicle". I'm mostly retired drive less that 20,000 miles a year, however
I am employed part time and have to drive 20 miles one way, which is not a
long distance for this area. Most Europeans don't understand the distances
between basic needs in the U.S. Before retirement my job required me to
travel to Germany often, it's a different world.

I'm not trying to be argumentive, and do enjoying communicating with you.
Someday I would really like to visit the UK, I was only there once, stuck in

As for general obesity figures, hey, we're doing better than the
Samoans... Great Britain seems to hard on our heels though.

I'd be willing to wager that the average "fat" Samoan is way more
physically capable than your typical fat American. Samoans are a big
people; they value bigness, and they've lived by that standard for a
long time. I don't believe obesity in Samoans is correlated to
indolence and an imbalanced lifestyle, as it is for most obese
    Americans.

able to ride with only breathing through the nose. I find this almost
impossible to believe, since when I'm pushing it, I breathe using the nose
mouth, ears, you name it, just trying to get more air circulating. Not that
I'm out of breath, just the volume is too much for pure nose breathing.

Probably because the treaty is mainly meant to pull down the U.S. economy,
while not affecting the big polluters in 3rd world countries.

Not only that, but there has only been ONE country to actually ratify
the Kyoto Accord (Romania!). And for those of you who think Bush is
behind not ratifying the Kyoto Treaty, you should realize that the
Senate voted it down 95-0. There are a host of flaws with the Treaty,
and the whole basis of global warming is one that's hardly universally
accepted in scientific circles (other than those who derive massive
funding relating to it of course).

    Despite all the hysterics,

"scientists have calculated that even if Kyoto is fully implemented
according to its proponents' fondest dreams, the net reduction in
global temperatures will be a mere 0.14 degrees C by the year 2100
at a cost that will approach one trillion dollars annually by
    2100."

    http://www.tysknews.com/Depts/Environment/climate_action_report.htm

Somehow I think we have bigger priorities...

For more info, read up on some of the scientific efforts to put an end
to the mythology regarding global warming:

"The Heidelberg Appeal -1992 - over 4000 scientists appeal for
    reason:"
    http://www.sepp.org//heidelberg_appeal.html

"The Leipzig Declaration On Global Climate Change - 1997 100+
distinguished scientists agreeing that "the drastic emission control
policies deriving from the Kyoto conference lacking credible support
from the underlying science to be ill-advised and premature"😉: "
    http://www.sepp.org//leipzig.html

"The Oregon Petition (1998 over 17,000 distinguished scientists
agreeing that the Kyoto Treaty is "based upon flawed ideas"😉: "
    http://www.oism.org/pproject/

I realize this won't be as sensational as the truly dorky movie being
released on the "subject" (Day After Tomorrow or something like that),
but thought that some of you might like some more info on a
    politically hot subject.

It's probably closer to 2% who actually can't ride due to obesity.

-- Every time I see one of those Dr Phil shows about weight loss, I think

, geez get a bike! They all hate the idea of 'exercise' because they think
of boring things like calisthenics. One woman actually DROVE FOUR BLOCKS to
work! When they start exercising, they all get treadmills, which are fine,
but nothing will burn it off faster than a bike! If you RIDE it that is.
I've heard from people who have said that when they started riding they were
too fat to get into the drops, until they lost the weight. But if you're
really obese, it's not like you can just get up and go, it can be dangerous!

He's not working hard enough. At high intensity I don't know anyone

'cause quite often, not always, when you aren't proud of how your body
