To improve my sprint, should I be doing intervals on a gear that is slightly bigger (ie. small rear cog) than I would normally use?

For example if I use 52x13 should I train with 52x12 or 11?

What is the best interval duration for sprint training?

The adrenaline factor of competition will allow you to use a bigger gear than in training.

I have noticed this on the track and on the road.

Best to train in a sprint gear that you can get on top of and accelerate all the way to the (imaginary) finish line. Does not matter whether this is a 13, 14 or 15 cog. You are training to apply maximum power at a certain cadence range and transferring those specifics to a sprint in the race.

The race sprint may be faster due to adrenaline and picking the right wheel to come off so you may find yourself in a higher cog but within the same training cadence range.

Best interval -

Total recovery (10 minutes +) for speed

Partial recovery (45 seconds) for speed endurance

My AU.o2cents worth.
