I have a brand new MTB (less than 100km) with full Shimano Deore groupset and the smaller Deore chainwheel (44-32-22T) at the front. Is it possible to JUST fit the bigger Deore chainwheel (48-36-26T) without having to replace any extra parts (e.g. BB, Front Derailleur, etc)?
From what I can figure out on the Shimano Technical Docs, there should be no problem, but I get a lot of different responses from local Bike Shops.
From the 2006 Shimano Book, Pages , 101, 183, Crankset FC-M530 is available with a 48 tooth big ring and uses FD-M530-* Front derailleur which works with a 44 and 48 tooth big ring.
If in doubt, call Shimano on the phone, they are most helpful.
you could also check a few websites (cbo, adrenalinebikes, etc)for replacement rings in different sizes for a good cost. most all 4-bolt rings will interchange (except xtr and one other something, i can't seem to remember). i'm looking at a "custom crank cluster" for my weyless sp when i build it back up next winter (needs new paint now).
