Bike Overhaul Questions

What do you mean, "what kind of spindle"? Square or splined? Visual observation would be a good place to start.

When I bought mine the LBS had two different ones, one with thin splines, one with wide splines. You should be able to tell which one fits by looking at it.

LBS sells water repellant grease, use it on bearings, threads.
Cable housings should probably be replaced.

I would replace rusted bolts if possible.
I've never had anything on my bike I couldn't scrub off with a damp rag, sorry.
