Depending on how much work it needs...usually a general service will cost around $35 - $50

Depends if they replace any parts. But for a no-part service I'd be reckoning $20-$30; I guess that
depends on where you live and whether it's your LBS or not.

If you only need your indexing adjusted, maybe it wont be much at all.

It would be cheaper and possibly more thorough if you bought one of the many books on bike
maintenance and did it yourself. Long term you would save heaps. Most of what you need to do
doesn't require special tools or skills, and regular attention will reap benefits that can't easily
be measured.

A few months ago a friend asked me to service his bike prior to a tour. I stripped the bike and
rebuilt it, spending over 10 hours in the process and I'm pretty efficient. Needless to say, I made
just over $5/hour and I won't be doing it again in a hurry. I'd much prefer to spend my time riding
and servicing my own bikes.

Enquiries around that time yielded results from $50 to $100 per hour for labour on bikes, depending
of course on which LBS did the work.

Much as I would prefer to do otherwise, I find myself recycling older bikes and it is shameful that
99% of them have never seen a moment of maintenance in their lives. It is a testament to their
design and engineering that a 20 year old bike can be revived and put back into use with very
little effort and expense. On the other hand, bikes that receive the right kind of care outlast
their owners.

Perhaps it's just me but I'd much rather keep an old thing (any device/appliance, etc) going than
trash it and buy a new one. I just bought an electric mower and edge trimmer for $5 each. With a bit
of tweeking I'll certainly get my money's worth.
