Bike skipping gears!!!

Hi all. Have been bogged down with bike problems ; o ( getting very demoralised. bottom bracket worn so replaced it, drive train still seemed to have resistance after changing it, but other than that everything was ok, so I took the cassette, jockey wheels and chain off, cleaned and replaced them. They are campag veloce 10 spd. I found the lower jockey wheel was in the wrong place, so reinstalled it in the correct position and with correct direction. Went to go out for a ride today and found gears needed adjustment, so set the tension and limits, but when going from large to small on rear cassette, gears are being skipped e.g, 1, 2, 3, 4 , 5 , 6 then straight to gear 10, or maybe 1, 2, 3, 4, skip to 7, then skip to 10. My bike is more off the road than on it at the moment!! What do you think the problem is now!???? Thanks

Are your cables properly lubed? Are your rear derailleur's parallelogram pivots properly lubed? FYI. I prefer to use coiled BRAKE CABLE housing rather than the suspect-in-my-mind parallel-stranded "derailleur" cable housing which Campagnolo & Shimano supply with their cable sets ...

Replace the cables and housings, and make sure the derailleur hanger is straight. If you don't have the dagger tool to check and tweak the hanger, take it to a bike shop and have them do it.

And 99.44 percent of all riders are perfectly happy with rope-stranded shift housing. It's more stable longitudinally, making for more accurate cable pulls. Its only drawbacks are that it is less flexible (make bigger loops) and tends to delaminate, thereby losing all longitudinal integrity, if the cables are rusty or otherwise damaged, the rider insists on forcing a shift after the cable or derailleur says no, or it's been on the bike for more than five years.

I would agree, the big skip sounds like a cable problem but I wouldn't get hung up on what kind to use. I would get the appropriate type of cable necessary and replace it. I would also suggest using teflon cables. Make sure you don't have any tight bends on your housings. And once you get it fixed, happy trails!

I have had the cable replaced and it is still a problem. When clicking the shifter button the cable initially is released in even quantities, then once around the middle of the cassette the button doesn't feel as solid and when I press it, lots of cable is released and the deraileur drops to the bottom cog.

I guess that I should have asked this question, before ....

• WHICH generation of Veloce levers do you have? If it is pre-QS, then you may need to replace the G-springs. If they are QS (Xenon-based), then you may need to replace the handle body, itself

The last time I experienced a skipping gear issue was because my cables lacked lubrication. I got that sorted in less than 10 minutes and never had an issue since then. However, if you're struggling to fix this issue, it's best you take your bike to a bike shop or specialist to get it fixed up.
