I've never been much of a car guy, and it looks like the time has come to once again become completely car-free. The one I still own hasn't moved in over a year and it's really just costing money for nothing. Most trips can be quite easily accomplished on one of my bikes, a skateboard or on foot, but some situations may arise when I need some extra capacity, so I was starting to think about bicycle trailers, both the flat kind for hauling stuff, as well as the tent type you might put a child in. Any input or advice from those who have used those things would be very welcome!

My experience with trailers has been limited to a BOB Ibex and an Extrawheel Voyager. Neither of which would be suitable for your needs. Maybe take a look at http://www.biketrailershop.com/ for some ideas on what is around and pricing. Andrew

While I don't know squat about hauling on a bicycle, I do see many Instructables on building bike trailers.
