Cycling uses about 500 calories (c) an hour at 20 km/hr.
100 km bike ride takes about 2,500 c.
Studies show that in the west for every 1 c of food on our plate it takes 10 c of oil to produce, transport, cook ect.
so a 100 km bike ride would need 25,000 c of oil for food to provide energy.
1 liter of petrol has about 7,536 calories in it.
100 km bike ride would use about 3.3 liters petrol.
the average car using 10 liters 100 km would use 75,360c of oil to travel 100 km.
4 people traveling in a car would use less oil than 4 cyclists.

Im sure different figures can be found but you get the general idea

Of course this dosent include a lot of factors such as manufacture of cars & roads, pollution, congestion and all the other vallid points for bike travel but highlights we need to look at more than just bike riding.

Make sure you factor in the product life cycle. Cars have a massive overhead for manufacture and disposal. Their daily usages also has a huge impact on the health system.

Ok so that is a generation ago in Australia, it's probably 50% more now!

Perhaps you can think your number through a little better and then post them here for comment.

True, but they're account for the bulk of the cost.

That said, it is amazing how efficient a modern car engine is though. To be able to move 1,500KG of car and 4 people say 100KM and use only 7 or 8 liters of petrol is pretty damn good.

We've sent a man to the moon and have had rovers driving around Mars for years. We could do A WHOLE LOT better. At least in America we should be doing a lot better.

Why?, When they can charge you your house mortgage just to fill up your car. While they are making money off all this gas, nothing will be done.

And therein lies the problem.
 
A problem, perhaps, but (at least in the U.S.), if gas goes TOO high, it kills the economy, and oil companies start to take a hit. We could be going down that road again this summer.
