Americans raced on six different teams, three of them as leaders. Lance Armstrong has become a
worldwide recognized name synonymous with France's crown jewel and before him Greg LeMond. But
riders like Ted Smith, Jack Simes, George Mount Nancy Neiman Barnet, Audrey McElmury, Mike
Neel, Marianne Martin and the pioneers of the 7-Eleven Cycling Team paved the way for the
stars of the sport today by riding mostly anonymously in a sport that received little or no
attention back home. In the 100 years of the Tour de France only thirty-three North American
men have had the rare honor of racing in cycling's most esteemed event - only twenty-one of
them managing to finish the race. Six of them won stages. And only four have worn the elusive

Americans raced on six different teams, three of them as leaders. Lance Armstrong has become a
worldwide recognized name synonymous with France's crown jewel and before him Greg LeMond. But
riders like Ted Smith, Jack Simes, George Mount Nancy Neiman Barnet, Audrey McElmury, Mike
Neel, Marianne Martin and the pioneers of the 7-Eleven Cycling Team paved the way for the
stars of the sport today by riding mostly anonymously in a sport that received little or no
attention back home. In the 100 years of the Tour de France only thirty-three North American
men have had the rare honor of racing in cycling's most esteemed event - only twenty-one of
them managing to finish the race. Six of them won stages. And only four have worn the elusive
