Is there a big difference between the two wheelsets? or are u paying more for the latter just because it is mavic?

No comparisan, not even close to being in the same category, the Elite is a far superior wheel. A closer comparisan would be the Race Lite to Elite. The Select is an entry level wheelset on bikes at the $1000(US) price point. The Race Lites are a big step up and only run about $300.
