Hello all,can anyone tell me about bottom brackets for road bikes.It shows an english thread and an Italian thread ??How do i know which one to get,this is for an Ultegra set up.Thanks.

First you need to know what threading you have on your frame. Best thing you could do is take your frame to your LBS and ask them what kind of BB you need to get for that crankset.

What Ultegra crankset are you using?

English is 68mm and Italian is 70mm

It depends on the frame and not on the parts you will put on it.

What kind of frame is it?

"Italian" BBs and "English" BBs are different in a few ways:

  • Firstly the thread pitch is different;
  • secondly the thread direction is different: English BBs have a non drive side with a right hand thread and a drive side with a left hand thread. Italian BBs are right hand thread for both sides of the frame.
  • Thirdly they are of slightly different diameters (the Italian is slightly larger in diameter)

The majority of bikes these days (even several made in Italy) come with "English" or BSA bottom bracket threads, but you would still need to check to make sure you don't waste your money. The manufacturer of the frame should be able to tell you (it might be on their website somewhere).

you can install Ultegra on either thread, after you figure out what is yours
you have the choice to buy the cups for Italian or for British,
