Is someone clubbing lobsters? Don't they get carded at the door?
That'd make for a Donna Summer Lobster Fest.

I not aware that the meat is marketed in the US -- or anywhere else for that
matter. The commercial hunt is mainly for the pelts and usually the
carcasses are left behind on the ice floes (although some body parts have
made it to the Orient as Viagra substitutes). ;o) The small seal
hunters, as opposed to the large seal hunting operations, eat the meat and
seal flipper pie is considered a local delicacy. In the last couple of
years a company has started marketing seal oil capsules as a great source of
omega3 oils.

Like most wild meat, there are those who would walk miles for seal meat and
those who can't stomach the stuff. I've never tasted it, but I hear that,
depending on how it's cooked, it can be quite good. OTOH, I've seen the
bottled product and it's made me gag.

There are different species of deer. Most of the deer in the Great Lakes are are
White Tail , the odd big buck might get up over 200 lb, but the average weight is
close to 150 lb.

Is the specific group the "Humane Society of the United States"? The
HSUS isn't the same thing at all as your local Humane Society. It's a
very thinly-veiled front for PETA. And my opinion of PETA involves
language I'll not use in this group.

ObFood: I didn't climb to the top of the food chain to eat roots and
berries.

Seals aren't actually sea food, they are mammals which are killed for
their skins; and people who fish for crabs go out in boats and catch
them in traps. You not eating snow crab won't make the slightest
difference to a seal hunter, who as far as i know goes out on ice floes
withn a gun. If the seal hunt bothers you, what you want to boycott are
things made of sealskin.

They've got some pretty trick hunting bows and arrows, these days.

The boycott of seafood, if successful, would have an impact on the
fisheries, the same industry that regulates the seal hunt. The point of the
boycott is to hurt Canada, not the seal hunter personally.

I don't give a damn, now. Anyone know where to buy a sealskin coat?

Yeah, I have a full size crossbow, but have not gotten around to
assembling it yet. ;-)

It takes up less space in it's box. <sigh>

Grand ideas, short on time........

and space.

If I want a deer bad enough, all I have to do is put a brush guard on
the front of the truck and drive some of the back roads at night. <G>

I generally just ask my freinds that have property. I have a fresh
venison haunch in the freezer right now that Dad's buddy gave us. I've
not decided what to do with it yet.

Probably 1 slow roast and 1 stew.

But if they stopped seal hunting, it would damage Canada's entire
fishing industry due to the over-population of the seals.

It's a no win situation.
The Boycott would be STUPID and POINTLESS!!!

The only thing I've seen on the boycott is boycotting Red Lobster. Now
I only saw that because I was looking for the RL logo for a project.
The boycott is interesting but quite frankly I have so many other life
demands right now that I will just have to settle for proper composting
and recycling.

Yes, there's something wrong with boycotting A because you don't like what B
is doing and want A to make B stop.

Well we don't really boycott RL but we likely don't eat there much more
than one every 3 - 4 years. Friends of our really wanted to go there so
we went along. The food wasn't all that bad IIRC but I've had better
<shrug> The project pics came out really nice! I did a 5" x 7" of her
that she just loved. Personally I think lobster done at home is better
but that likely depends on the cook ;) Out the door...

But that's not the scenario with this boycott. The boycott is of a
country's product, to force the country to stop something it's doing.
Ultimately, the same people will be hurt by the boycott or the stop of the
seal hunt. A great number of the people who hunt seals also fish crab,
doing both is the only way to keep food on the table and a roof over the
family's head.

From my experiences there I thought it would have been okay if the food had been
priced according to its quality. It would have been acceptable at about half the
price.
