Good ride today in mercifully cooler weather. Five of us out: two founders
in Dutch and DaveB, Gags, B.T. and I. A bit blustery, but the WSW wind did
give us a nice push down Doncaster Rd and certainly didn't hurt down the
first big DH. Yay! I clocked a PB of 91.7kph to join the ninety club after
drafting Gags and then Dutch at the important bits (ie, the steepest). Think
I may have gone faster (no, seriously) if Dutch wasn't moving out to
overtake Dave as I came past - three wide was a bit hairy as I couldn't see
if anyone (car) was coming up towards us. Pulled out of the slipstream early
and just eased past rather than stayed in and whooshed past. Oh well, plenty
fast enough, I s'pose.
Big up was fun... Gags set a pace I struggled to stay with and then after a
couple of kays said he was sitting up. No arguments from me. Dutch is
showing the signs of someone who is racing into form, catching our wheel and
staying on 'til the top, even jumping off the front of a group of tri's we
caught near the top. Gags and I weren't exactly taking it easy, either, only
going about ten seconds slower than our last effort @ 14.25ish.
Dave's also looking fit. I don't think I've seen anyone come to the waiting
point at KG looking so relaxed on the bike. Did the whole thing out to St A
as well, no stresses. BT seemed to be having more fun this week also, which
is good as he's into his second or third week of cycling after a few years
out. Living proof that the BR's not really as tough as the profile might
seem to people used to Beach (yawn) Road.
We wussed out on Burgundy street, though, and cut it a little short by just
going from Heidleberg straight over the freeway at Burke Rd and up to Balwyn
then Box Hill for me.
Totals: 78.53km @ 27.1kph (from and back to my place in BH north) max of
91.7kph (just like to type it).
Now... are we doing Boxing Day, or is Monday 27th an alternative? I'll
happily (sort of) do both, but Monday I'll be there.
Also, Dutch and I brought up the idea of doing the 1/20 on Mountain Highway
perhaps for a mid-week ride. Anyone interested? It's a decent climb, but
nothing too hard. Lot of coffee places up top in Sassafras, too.
