I never knew Wiggins was in a road race where someone died. He talks about it in an interview with Shortlist mag - bit.ly/d3PiUE - Does anyone know who it was? It must’ve been a while ago because they weren’t wearing a helmet? He gives a pretty good interview all round, seeing as though he doesn’t do too much press, and I also had no idea Paul Smith was his best buddy? I reckon he can win the TDF this time around.

I think the most high-profile death in recent years was Andrei
Kivilev in 2003 Paris-Nice. Bradley Wiggins was there riding for FDJ.

Helmets were becoming more commonplace in the peloton, but it was Kivilev's death that spurred the authorities to mandate helmets.

Also, the authorities mandated that TT helmets do some actual protecting. That's why the helmets of today look so much bulkier than the ones pre-2004.

It was a good measure too. Without it, we might have seen the deaths of Oscar Pereiro and Jens Voigt. Whew!
