I've just got a couple of new XT rear brakes on the cheap, planning to
fit one as a front brake.
Now the Shimano instructions state several times that you shouldn't fit
a brake designed for the rear at the front. I've studied these brakes
in great detail and cannot tell them apart, except for the cartridge
itself (easily swapped around).
Anyone know if I'm missing something here?

Most brakes mount on the trailing edge of the front fork wrt wheel
rotation; and the leading edge of the seat stays. Thus the forces
experienced by the mounting system will be completely different front
and rear.Maybe yours don't differ but others covered by the same manual do?
