I recently read a post on hear by some guy who was claiming that Brian Maxwell's heart failure was caused by a combination of his being "overweight" while still running as hard as he used to when he was lighter. His source was that he talked to a woman who recently saw Brian and said that he looked "heavier."
This is complete B.S. First of all, I knew Brian and ran with him at Cal in the early 80s. He was my x-country coach. When I knew him Brian was in awesome condition. He had pretty much the minimum body fat that one could have and still function. Even if in March, 2004 he was 30 lbs. heavier than he was in 1980, which is pure speuclation, he still would have been in much better shape than 99.9 % of other men at the age of 51.

Did you happen to run into him again over the past 20+ years, or is this just a guess based on that time period? Changes often occur in the body between when one is in their 20's and 50's. 😉

That was just our (former?) schmuck troll "MacElroy," who has since disappeared. Those posts were not legitimate opinion from an actual runner, but just invective intended to stir the pot.

The guy who posted that was a troll called "MacElroy". Basically, we laughed at him and he ran away.

The only way MacElroy could adhere to a request to only post about subject matter that he has some understanding of is to stop posting. Thankfully, he seems to have done so.
