Today was my first day out on a bike since being layed up with heavy colds
at the end of November and beginning of December. I chose to do an easy and
flattish 100km DIY Audax taking in Wetherby, York, Selby and back to Leeds.

I spent much of the early morning faffing around and set off around eleven
o'clock with the expectation of being back by five o'clock. The undulating
ride to Wetherby revealed that my airways had not fully recovered but I was
not in an discomfort so I pressed on to York via Rufforth. The airfield was
busy with lots of microlights and powered gliders taking off and landing.

I had to modify my route slightly in York. The Ouse had burst it's banks
and I had to join the York-Selby cycle path just past the race course as
access from the city centre looked impossible. The York Selby cycle route
was quite busy and I stopped for a break on the 'Angler Bike and Dog'
bridge. I shared some of my jelly babies with a toddler who was very
appreciative. Lots of people were looking at the flooded fields from the
bridge.

I had fun and games with the automatic toilets in Selby. They are big
enough to accommodate wheelchairs and so I decided to take my bike in with
me rather than leave it outside chained to a railing. I thought that it
would be much less hassle - how wrong could I be! The door opened upon the
insertion of my 20p and after shuffling inside with my bike, the door
refused to close. As I had used my only loose change I literally couldn't
afford to take the risk of trying to put the bike poutside and secure it to
the railing with out the doors closing on me. Eventually the doors closed
much to my relief.

The sun was quite low by the time I left Selby and this gave me an
opportunity to try out my Lumotec halogen dynamo powered lamp. I also was
on the margins of bonking and my speed dropped enough for me to be riding in
darkness well be fore I got back to Leeds. I was very impressed with the
light output and the beam pattern of the lamp and will be doing more night
riding just for the sake of it pretty soon. By the time I reached Garforth,
my kness were beginning to hurt and I managed to limp home in just under
seven hours including breaks. Thankfully the pace of a 100km DIY Permanent
is less than 15km/hour so I didn't feel the urge to up the pace to meet a
deadline.

I got back just in time for the sunday dinner which provided the buffer to
accommodate some Ibuprofen.

Feel better already :)
