I will soon be going to the US on Holiday for a couple of weeks and am planning on buying a new bike over there. Looking on websites at various cycle stores there is BIG savings on bikes over there compared to Australia.

My question is am I liable for tax or duty of any kind when I bring it back into Australia? If there is is there any tips to avoid or minimise it? Any commments would be welcomed.
The bike I am looking at will be approx AUD2500.00

Put a $150 bike in a bike box when you go there, give it away, then take your new bike back... not saying it will work though....

Wouldn't t be easier just to get a box over there? Why take one over?

To prove that you took a bike over, less likely to be charged duty...

We have done this and didn't have any problems at all. Our bike is worth a lot more than what you are getting and customs were only concerned that our bike was nice and clean.
I would ride it around a bit so it looks like you have used the brakes etc., and if they ask wether it is a new bike just say it has been polished within an inch of it's life and that you look after your things. There are rides on all the time in the US. Just find one that was in the region that you visited and say thats what you were over there for.
There should not be any duty or tax on bikes.
