Need some cheering up, so what training rides am I up for, what is the local road and mtb racing scene like, what are the clubs to join, what are the best bike stores.

AND if your really nice, can you please tell me the best suburb to be living in to ride....I hear Toowong is the place?

Thats dedication, asking waht suburb to live in to ride bikes....BRILLIANT.

Oh no, not Toowong, then you'll end up ALWAYS doing the river ride, or
Mt Coot-tha. BO-RING!

You want to live on the Southside, then you can come to Daisy Hill with
Lotte, Paulie and I.

If you're gorgeous, you have to join Team Fresh, that's the rules
(http://www.freshsports.com.au/ and yes, my boyfriend is in that team).

If you're rich, Peloton (http://www.peloton.com.au)

If you're pov and want to race crits, Balmoral (forget url, it's one of
those asn ones...)

Dunno about MTB racing... except that we have heaps of enduros in the
SEQ area.

Bike shops... lots of good'uns... depends what you're after really.

Don't worry Rhino, Brisbane is a pretty good place for riding and the weather is much better than melbourne.

Check out the archives for BNE or brisbane you should be able to get a good idea.

Andrew von Berky's site:
www.members.optusnet.com.au/vonberky
is the duck's guts for local races, training rides, and club links etc.

The Toowong area would be good, it's close to the city via a bikeway, close to where a lot of training rides start (Milton/South Brisbane/West End) and within easy riding distance of some good mountain biking areas. It depends on where you are working as well I guess. Anywhere within a 10km radius of the city would be ok.

The common training rides on the northern suburbs are the river loop (about 40km around the river suburbs), the airport, the northern bay suburbs like Sangate & Redcliffe, and the mountains Mt Nebo,Mt Glorious & Mt Mee. Southern side of the city it's the bay suburbs like Cleveland, Wynnum, the Brisbane Sea Port, Carbrook Redland Bay/Mt Cotton.

Clubs wise, there are too many I reckon, a lot who don't really do much except put on maybe one event a year. The club a couple of us on here are with is HPRW ( www.hamiltonwheelers.com ) pretty friendly and has a really good road racing season, which is good if you like hills and get bored going round and round crit tracks. Abby and a few others are with Balmoral.

if you're a trackie there are 'dromes at Chandler and Caboolture.

Bike stores, I can't really think of a bad one, it depends on what you are after and everyone will have good and bad experiences. Close to the city, you've got Velo at the Grange - a good store for hardcore roadies, Victors in the CBD are good, as are Planet bikes at the gabba.

Don't know much about the mtb racing scene only done the epic a couple of times, but check out www.mtbdirt.com.au. Maybe Lotte and Paulie can fill you in on that.

Thousands of southerners every year fall over themselves to move to
Qld. Melbourne and Adelaide are great, but wild horses couldn't drag me
back to southern (Adelaide) weather, after 14 years in Qld. There's
nothing like being able to stay lean in winter, with sunny warm weather
every day ideal for riding. Cycling here is big and growing daily. You
can always find things you prefer about your origin, but of itself,
Brisbane cycling makes lots of people very happy and fit.

I agree with Tam on the location. Lots of people ride from Park Road,
Milton and from Southbank; if you are within say 10km of Milton, you
can ride there to join the 6am bunches. But there are bunches that
start all over the place, so don't die in a ditch to get a place in
Toowong.

This is great, now I am cheered up.....thanks for all the feedback. My work will be in Archerfield, so I will start looking at places in Toowong and then elsewhere. Look set to start joining all your training rides as of March.

FYI: I could have said NO to the move, but for those of us that work in corporate jobs....saying no is "career suicide" for the future. PLUS, I love the adventure of going somewhere new.

Oooh, if you're at Archerfield, definitely find somewhere South of the
city. NOT Toowong! You could try Moorooka, so you can ride with Lotte
and Paulie, or somewhere near Mt Gravatt (nice little hill).

Rhino

If you are working in Archerfield, DON'T get a place in Toowong. They
are on opposite sides of the river and getting across (in a car or bus)
can be a bore in peak traffic. Look on the southside of the river. Try
the few suburbs in the arc from NE to NW from Archerfield. Close to A/f
is pretty drab.

Donga

Yep - if you are working at Archerfield, then north of the river is
probably a bad idea..... Our major road infrastructure is sh!te
(generally...), and you'll be cursing the commute traffic.

Moorooka would be great - if you want to be a bit more inner city
(which is a good idea if you can afford it), West End, Hill End,
Highgate Hill..... All good, and close to the major rides....

Andrew von Berky's site (as posted by adam85) is defintely (I reckon!)
the best Brisbane cycling site - if its happening, its on there.....
Good luck with the move mate, I think you'll like it up here!!!!!

Cheers,
Abby

So were you at the upmarket Couran Cove, or the downmarket Couran Point,
run by the same people but more likely to flood in a mini-cyclone (what
happened the last time I was there... unfortunately the storm broke
before I was due to head back, so we didn't get a free extra night.)

You come to love having rain when it's warm and not when it's cold! I
commute rain or shine on my MTB and enjoy the wet days.

Most Bne roadies don't go out in the rain, but the reality is you don't
miss many rides.

FDutch......is Brisbane ready for a crazy singlespeed/fixie enduro MTB rider?....quess we will see!!!

On 2006-01-24, Donga (aka Bruce)
was almost, but not quite, entirely unlike tea:

Well we have a crew of about 10 fixie road riders and try to do a group ride
every 2 weeks or so, drop me a line on ahblake at gmail dot com once you're
here and I'll add you to the email list.

For SS MTB, give the guys at Epic Cycles a call (Milton/Paddington). One
staff member is a fixie rider, one an SS MTBer and one is building a pink
Surly 1x1 with lots of pink components (a girl FWIW)

Andrew.

Hey Rhino,

Teamfresh are a great bunch. But as for the being
gorgeous part - can't be true, they let me ride.

They cater for a range of levels and have lots of
social get togethers. You can tag along on training
rides most days or get as serious as you want about
racing.

Mt Tamborine tomorrow am - whoot!

Lots of coaches on hand as well if you need them.

They're kinda based on the southside too, Carindale
area.

You're gonna love being able to ride all winter in
shorts.

Hey Mick!

I'm going to be there as well... I guess... Steven is insisting I come
along and that I will not be the slowest person on the ride...
