Burley alternate hitch

I'm begging for some help here, I'm not sure what to do. Here's the
problem:

I bought a Burley alternate hitch so I can tow the trailer with my
Hurricane.
It fits properly on my DF, which has fairly thick dropouts.
It doesn't fit properly on the 'bent, which has thinner dropouts. The
left side doesn't have the necessary 1.5mm or greater recess of the
axle in the dropout as per the alternate hitch documentation. The
result is closing the QR clamps the right dropout properly, but the
left side stays loose.

How to fix? The bike shop I bought the hitch from suggested taking
1.5mm off the axle, but that's kinda a no going back solution and I'm
not too keen on the idea either.
What about putting a thin washer somewhere on the left side of the axle
to create this extra space? I'm not too sure on this idea from a
safety point of view.
