On overhauling one of my older mtb (if that should make a difference) i
noticed that the bottom bracket cartridge smelt of burnt oil/grease. I
cleaned it all up re-installed the BB and the cranks and then noticed play
in the cranks. I take them off try new ones, still play so reason its the
BB. Take the BB out again, seems to be no play in the tapers and the BB
cartridge and shell looks undamaged. Clearly its one of these elements but
i'm unable to tell with out dishing out for components i may not need or for
a frame which is shot.
What do the symptoms indicate to you?

I often convince myself of this but in truth the smoke is coulding my
judgment on the other side of the cranium unfortunatley. :S

The smell just means a stinky grease was used in the past. Short of hitting it
with torch there isn't anything that'll burn grease in a BB.

I am pretty sure that there was simply an assembly error of some sort. Let's put
it this way, if it were me doing it, I'd be damn sure it was my mistake and
would simply put it back together taking pains to get all correct.
