I know... y'all will all thing this is crazy. But he's not going to buy one for himself, and I'm planning on getting it from a store where he can exchange it if necessary. Here's my question: what kind of bike would y'all recommend? More specifically, I was thinking of a flat-bar road bike? The recipient always sighs when he sees bikes and says he'd like to get into riding. He would probably not be using it to commute, but he does live in an urban area, so a commuter-type bike would probably make sense. More recreational though. I wouldn't think a road bike would make as much sense because he'd be looking around at traffic and such - probably also taking it out on paths, but nothing mountain-worthy.
I've been reading all sorts of postings, but it seems like people are usually more knowledgable and buying for themselves, so I am hoping for help! What's just a safe bet? A good starter bike, but one that will be nice enough to last a long time? My budget is probably up to $1000. Recipient is a late 20s male in decent shape. Help would be MUCH appreciated - at least maybe pointing me in the right direction?

Which bike to purchase is a very personal decision. There is fit to consider as well as what type of riding the rider is going to do. Therefore, I am going to suggest that you give him a gift certificate to one of the better bike shops in your area. It is really kind of deflating to get or give the wrong kind of bike or the wrong size or color etc. With a gift certificate, he can pick out his own bike and I think that he will be much happier with it......and it is easier and possibly less expensive than exchanging a bike.
