buying a low end MTB or hybrid

Hi There,

I am looking to buy a hybrid or MTB for travelling to and from work in the inner west - five dock to silverwater and five dock to surry hills.

I'm looking to spend between $300-500.

I'd love some advice on the pros and cons of a hybrid compared to a MTB and what brands are good and what specs i should look for.

also, i'm a female rider so would be looking for a bike to fit a 5 foot 3 woman.

any help would be much appreciated.

Don't forget to budget for helmet, lights, multi tool, pump, spare tube, lights, lock etc.
