cable run question

So along with my wheel hub question above comes another one: The current RD cable runs bare under a curved guide over the top of the bottom bracket to a stop on the chainstay where it enters the standard housing loop into the RD. Fine for friction shifters but I'm worried about cable friction when I move to STI? I'm considering getting a couple clamp-on stops and running a short length of housing in its place. Thoughts?

The under the bottom bracket cable guide is standard for STI equipped bikes. As long as it's kept clean it will not add undue friction to your STI cabling or cause shifting problems.

Don't modify the bike based on things that 'might' happen, the BB cable guides are not a problem and work fine with STI shifting.

^^^ What he said. BUT, some emphasis on keeping them clean. If you ride in wet or dusty conditions, grit getting into the guide can cause shifting problems. Clean/lube your bike after wet or dusty rides and it's not a problem.
