cable stuck in an sti shifter

I have a cable stuck in the right sti shifter( 600) and I cant get it out. I dont want to take the thing apart unless I have to and even then I will need some guidance. I have tried to apply pressure while pressing the return lever but the cable won't move so i can see the head . It doesnt seem to want to move in either direction.

I just had the Tandem repainted and when reassembling the same thing happened to me. In my case the cable bent right behid the retaining lug. By turning or twirling the cable I was able to remove it. It took some carefull juggling with a small sharp awl to get the lug to line up . Hope this works
