Is there any easy way to figure out how many calories are burned in certain lifts -- say 10 reps of shoulder presses with 50lb dumbbells straight up and down or 10 reps of flat bench with 80lb dumbbells? Its part curiosity and part wanting to compare a lifting workout to a cardio workout from the point of view of calories burned. Thanks.

According to www.fitday.com: 1 minute of Weight lifting with "vigorous effort" burns 7 calories/minute and 1 minute of Weight lifting with "light or moderate effort, light workout, general" burns 3 calories/minute Butthere is also the added calories burned by the added muscle from your workouts so over time you do end up boasting your overall resting metabolic rate. For a more definitive answer and the best overall picture you'd be best playing around with the tools at www.fitday.com or http://www.exrx.net/Calculators.html Using those you can get a good idea of your intake and how much you are burning.
