Building new bike and would like to get away from a triple crank. Thinking about Campy Chorus with a compact crank and the new 12-29 cassette. Unfortunately I'm not having any luck finding a distributor that has the cassette in stock. I also read somewhere that the cassette requires the 2010 Rear Derailer ?
Anybody know the scoop on this new 12-29 cassette ?
I'm 60 and need the low gears.

Thanks
Jerry

Mid December for the 12-29, just asked this morning. There is a plate for the 11s RD that tightens the spring in top bolt moving the RD cage away from the biggest cog but I think a normal 11s RD will work fine. If ya want, you can get a 10s mid cage RD and use that. It will work with 11s shifters just fine.

It's time someone ask Campy about a 12-27 10s cassette. They've broken their 27t cherry with the 12-27 11s, now all they have to do is turn the love on 10s. Given the dearth of aftermarket options on 12-27 (or for Campy cassettes in general) and given what I've heard from other riders, a 10s 12-27 would be big winner, especially for those of us who live where the road goes up a lot. I'd buy two.

Maybe we need a petition.

What sprokets would you prefer on a Campag 12 - 27? This one:

12/13/14/15/17/19/21/23/25/27 ? or
12/13/14/15/16/17/19/21/24/27?

The first one would likely be ideal, but the second one would do, too. The climbing around here varies a lot, so having more gearing options at the low end would make sense

I think a 12-27 would be popular choice w/ Campy riders, especially compared to 13-26.

Don't want a 12-27......I want a 12-29 :D

Isn't there a 13 -29 ten speed?

Yup, but 29 is a bit too low, and 13 is not high enough.

Agree. I think Campagnolo has been living in the dark ages in terms of cogset ratios for a while. Unfortunately instead of changing 10s to something worthwhile, like a 11x, 12x thru 29..they are doing that with 11s when 11s goes thruout the line in 2011.

11 and 12 thru 23, 25, 27 and 29 would be ideal.

FWIW. Presuming you already have 10-speed Campagnolo shifters, you can mate them to any 9-speed Shimano MTB-or-ROAD cassette ...

I also had a 12-30 8-speed XT cassette matched with one pair of 10-speed shifters ...

I use Shimano derailleurs -- front & rear.

I wish they'd explain why they thought 13-26 was a good idea.....unless it's aimed at juniors.

FWIW. Some/many(?}/most(?}/all{!} of Shimano's early, non-DA, 7-speed cassettes came with a 13t smallest (threaded) cog -- a legacy from the days of 7-speed freewheels where a 13t cog was the smallest available (I still have a 13-24 Uniglide cassette).

Someone in Vicenza must have thought that having a 13-xx cassette was a legacy range worth keeping in the catalog -- perhaps, a cassette with a 13t smallest cog was what Tullio had on his last bike!

I asked this very thing to the group from Campagnolo at Interbike and the response from the Italians was something along the lines of tradition, along with 170mm crank arms and 36 hole wheels being the 'standard'. BUT the one guy also mentioned that the most difficult thing they do is cogsets, in terms of manufacturing difficulty, particularly in terms of changing or adding a cog to an existing cogset.

11-25, 12-27 and now 12-29 all great gearing tho, Just need a 11-27 and bob's yer uncle.

I actually thought many weaker riders with compact cranks (50-34) would like 13-26, which is why I got one some time back. 50x13 at 40 kmph has a cadence of something like 82 rpm. My natural cadence is around there, as apparently is the case for a typical human. Since I could not sustain 40 kmph on the flats, 50x13 was a good high end limit. The low side 34x26 is plenty low enough for hills. I did not pedal descents, so overspinning there was not an issue. So, 13-26 seemed good for having a lot of gears in my ability range at the time. Maybe Campy had similar thoughts.

That said, I now find 13-26 too low and use 12-25. I also have an 11-23, though this seems too high a range (for me), and 34x25 is a bit too low. So maybe 11-24 next, if there is such a thing. I would be interested to know if anyone out there is running 13-26. What are your reasons to choose it? I thought it would be a popular pick, though have no clue if it is. The posts generally seem to suggest it is not so well received.

There is no 11-24.

13-26 just doesn't seem too versatile to me. The ranges that Peter listed (11-23,11-25,11-27,12-25, 12-27, 12-29) seem to cover all the bases for the vast majority of people and crank combinations. That is, a person could pick one of those cassettes, and it would cover most if not all of the rider's, uhm, rides.

Perhaps you are right about versatility, as mine now sits in a box unused and I only think of using either the 11-23 or 12-25. No 11-24 is good to know - one less thing to buy and try!

13-29 seems like a good range for a standard double 39-52 or 53. Not so good for a compact where 12-29 would be better for hilly rides.

11 tooth cogs never made sense to me for anything over a 46 tooth front ring. But then, I don't ever try to keep up with fast groups, so spinning out at a little over 30mph is not a problem for me.

I know this is an old thread, but I just joined and need some advice. I have a road bike with Campy chorus Gruppo which has a 12-25 10 speed cassette and a compact crank. My buddies tell me that a 12-29 will make it a lot easier to climb the mountains where I live. Will I have to also change the rear deraileur and chain?
