So anyone out there give it a try? I am running all 2008 Record components.

Can I get by with just new levers, a casette and chain or do I need derailleurs and a crank too?

I know I really don't need it but I really want it;) I did dig the season I got out of my 2008 stuff, but sort of wished I waited.

We were talking about that in an italian forum the other day.

A quite clever italian engineer created the object to even convert a 10 speed lever to a 11 one (the campagnolo original piece doesn't exist, for now, to operate the conversion 10->11).

He's very kind and would like to commercialise the piece (but this is likely to be impossible). He was forced (by his friends) to signup to that forum to explain his invention...

here a demonstration: http://it.youtube.com/watch?v=MZBzT4ZmSTU
(see his other videos for more infos... I suppose, now I'll take a look)

Anyway, in the first picture of his video he says "you need only our new mechanism + chain + sprocket" so probably the answer to first question is: "yes", and to the second: "no".

Yes. When we first got our 11s stuff, we installed it onto 10s derailleurs and it worked just fine. To upgrade, levers, cogset and chain.

The Moots demo bike we have on the floor that has 11s 'stuff' on it also has a 2008 Record 10s crank and chainrings-no problem.

Don't believe some sites that will tell you you need rings and derailleurs to upgrade, places that have initials B.B and Li......

Thanks man, that is just what I was hoping to hear. I could not see how I would need a new rear if the cassette fits on a standard wheel then it must be the same width just with narrower spacing. The derailleurs cannot possibly know how many gears it will shift as long as it can travel the upper and lower limits I figured I should be good.

Any idea if a standard short cage 2008 record RD will work with the 12-27 gearing and 39/53 up front?

Thanks again, Rich

Was there any difference in shifting performance? Some people have reported (WW forum l think) that the 10's der was a little chunky when shifting and that changing to an 11's improved shifting speed and smoothed out any slow or slopy shifts, sorry if this has been covered already but l have my 10's der tuned to a nice weight and would to keep using it.

Sure. We had that same Moots with a standard crank(53/39), 13-29 and short cage rear derailleur-no problem again. Just gotta make sure the chain length is right. A 12-27 will be no problem but make sure the chain length is correct.

Changing only the rear derailleur to an 11s one? In the stand, using an 11s rear derailleur with 10s ERGO didn't seem any different. 11s ders have 11 tooth pulley wheels and they are hard rubber rather than plastic....

Sorry i meant using 10's der with 11's shifters and chain some have said that it is chunkey shifting at best?

I didn't notice that when I first put 11s shifters mated with a Chorus 10s rear derailleur.

I think it was a Leonard Zinn article that I read the other day that was saying using the 10s cranks/chainrings had led to the occasional chain drop when standing and riding. Said the chain would jump off the big ring to the small ring and that when the crank was switched to an 11s one that it stopped.

Zin was in the Big/big combination when the chain dropped.

Concensus seems to be that the 10 speed crank will work fine with 11 speed set up.

I am going that way, 10 speed Centaur crank, Record 11 shifters (Based solely on Peter@V suggesting slightly clickier than Chorus 11 even though spare parts PDF basically shows Chorus and Recors shifters identical) and Chorus mechs and cassette.

Would be interested to hear opinions from users who have used both Chorus and Record 11 ergos re any difference in shifting feel.

Interesting video clip. Might give it a try, though I'd be nervous of taking the levers apart. Does he show how to install the part? I can see it been useful for peoples spare bikes.

If that were my video, I would have deleted it 'cuz that McGyvered drive train sounded like **** in the biggest 4-5 cogs. That drivetrain just screams "I'm gonna eat cogs and chains." For the cost of his "modification" (read: bastardization) and the chains and cogs it'll likely go through, I could likely sell off his current group, get a new 11s group, and not be very far behind, at all, in terms of cash outlay.

Did anyone read Zinn's disclaimer on below link under;
More feedback:
Don’t use a 10-speed crank with an 11-speed chain! (about half way down page)

http://www.velonews.com/article/86055/technical-qa-with-lennard-zinn-electric-shifting-and

Seems someone is claiming to have crashed due to chain suck using 10 speed crank with 11 speed.

Legitimate or BS?

May be legit but we have a 10s Record compact crank with our otherwise Chorus 11s stuff and have not seen any problems.
