I understand that there are special chains and chain rings designed for 8, 9 & 10 speed with the newer Campy stuff but I have a question.
Can you use a 10 speed chain ring in a 8 or 9 speed set up? Narrower chain ring vs wider chain? I know it won't work the other way if the chain is too narrow but is there a functional problem with 10 spd chain ring and 8-9 chain?

All derailer chains are the same 3/32" inside width.There really are no 8,9 or 10 speed chainrings as such..There is alot of marketing and BS. The campy 10 big ring is machined so that it sits .4mm closer to the small ring on 10 speed cranks.If you worry about that insignificant .4mm, www.branfordbike sells chainring spacers.
