Can I put 23C tires on my hybrid Kona Smoke 2-9?

Currently it has 700 35C but I want to go faster! If not then what is the thinnest tire size I can fit? Cheers

It depends on the bead-to-bead distance of your current rims ...

If the rims are 622-17, then yes.

If the rims are 622-19-or-more then it's probably not a realistic fit.

There must be a rule of thumb ... I'll just arbitrarily say that if the bead-to-bead measurement isn't at least 5mm less than the tire's theoretical size then the fit may be marginal.

BTW. To state the obvious, you'll need new tubes, too, for whatever tires you get.

On the side of the tire is says: 37-622 (700x35C-28x1 5/3x1 3/8)
Does that mean my rim width is 37mm?
What size tire would you recommend? 25C maybe?

If the rim's label doesn't indicate the bead-to-bead size (e.g., 622-13 ... sometimes the label has misinformation, BTW), then you need to remove the tire and physically measure it if it is something that you need-or-want to know.

Here's a picture of an AMBROSIO EXCELLENCE rim which was borrowed from another thread which you can use for reference. The bead-to-bead size for the particular rim is 13mm.

If the bead-to-bead size isn't meaningfully narrower than the tire's theoretical size, then the tire will squat down inside the well of the rim ... it might be gangsta looking, but that's generally not a good thing for a bicycle tire.

If the bead-to-bead (and, overall rim width) is too narrow for a tire (that's very subjective ... you can fit a 700x32 tire in a 622-13 rim, but ... ) then it is generally difficult to insert & remove the wheel from the frame/fork due to the brake pads, themselves, needing to clear the tire.

700x35 is too wide for 23mm tires. My recommendation is nothing narrower than 32mm. When a tire is too narrow, cornering pressure can cause the tire to roll off the rim.
