I have seen a trek 1000 2004 on the net available in all sizes for £400 and looking into buying it. But i can only test the 2005 model in my shop. If I tested the 2005 model (i know it has a carbon fork) would it make a complety wrong impression of the 2004?

Not likely.Geometry and fit are the biggies. But everyone thinks CF forks are so chi-chi, so why go backwards, unless money is everything?

Just looking on the trek web site the 2005 1000 shows at £500. For the extra £100 I,d have the 2005 from the LBS-its worth that to be able to take it back for servicing, adjustments and any repairs. I know my LBS offers interest free credit and lots of help so I go there.
Purchase price is not everthing-after sales is just as important

There should be much if any difference between the 2005 and the 2004. Save the extra money for accesories.
Also, if your LBS does not offer the same after sale service for the 2004 as it does the 2005, find a bike shop that stands behind the product it sells.

THanks very much guys. So basically i'm better saving up for the 2005 because then I will be able to get service from them afterwards?

Fair enough, but remember that the bike purchase should not break your bank. To really enjoy riding in any serious matter you need to budget for a basic tool set (tire levers, a spare tube, a multitool and a patch kit, usually with an equipment pouch) riding shoes, cycling shorts and a helmet. A jersey, specific glasses and cycling gloves also help a lot.

In other words, if your total budget is 500, do not spend 500 on the bike. Get the 400 bike and invest the rest in the other things you need to enjoy your cycling!

And IMHO, go with the 2004. You will not really notice much of a difference!

Trek does not sell on the internet.
