Just when you thought it was safe to ride @ Majura....

Picture yourself riding through Pooklestein...you come out of that and
down the hill towards Majura Rd, through the drop out, you hang a right
into the small loop, out of that and around the edge of the fire trail.
Just before you head right, back into the forest....WHAMMO....that's
where the swooping menace is!

I rode just about everywhere else in there today with no problems. One
spot to avoid for a few weeks I guess.

I think I may have set some kind of speed record as I tried to get away
from the feathered menace. And me a Collingwood supporter as well. No
respect!

I had a thump on the back of the helmet followed by raucous screaming from a
magpie the other day. No damage done, so I had a bit of a laugh and kept
going as I was.

On tuesday I was riding to work and a magpie actually struck the helmet.

Normally they just swoop, so I had a close look at the helmet to see if it was any different.

I noticed that the red flashing light was not on the back of the helmet. Maybe thats the secret, have something to destract them and maybe the red light has this ability.

They have not been swooping over the last couple of days, so I am yet to see if my theory is correct.

also in Canberra, but on the road - Northbourne Ave bike lane - going north 4pm
a psycho magpie hit me on the left shoulder blade, WT, saw it was a magpie
and went back down, head up - he pounded my helmet until I got out of range

OTOH my morning magpie has stopped wing clapping, reduced his effort.

No... it's not the red light. They go me without one and they usually land
a few hits.

I saw the most bizarre thing the other day though. I've been off the bike a
while (no excuses really - just a slack ****) and saw from the bus a cyclist
wearing a helmet with two pin-pong balls on top with yes drawn on them. He
was riding through magpie territory and didn't see him get swooped but don't
know if it was his Kermit the Frog look or not. Anyone tried this??

Yeah, there's one on the riverside cycle path in town that's whacked my
helmet every day this week. Follows me for a few hundred metres. I
just ignore it and keep pedalling.

Must look comical to anyone looking.
