It'd be great if Lance and Cancellara gave the hour a crack this year, who would you back?

No timetable set, but it remains a goal

World time trial champion Fabian Cancellara has reiterated his desire to tackle the world hour record. However, he would not go so far as to name a date or location, only confirming that it was still one of his goals.

Cancellara, unquestionably the worlds best time trial specialist, is preparing for the 2010 season at Saxo Bank's training camp in Fuerteventura. He will take aim at the Classics this season, with his sights set firmly on the Tour of Flanders, as he tries to add another Monument to his wins in Paris-Roubaix and Milano-Sanremo.

The hour record, however, is an event that Cancellara believes has lost some of its prestige in recent years and that it requires the interest of more riders.

"It's lost its importance and some of its honour. Before every big champion did it. Guys like Rominger, Hinault, Indurain, Merckx, they all did it and now the current champion is Ondrej Sosenka and nobody talks about it," he told Cyclingnews.

did someone say Big Lance? yeah, the life and honour of that tt would be on fire if it was something Big Lance cared to take on but what's one hour other than the time it takes to break a sweat to him? :D

and i gotta say that it is exactly those kinds of cyclists that lower my opinion of them as a whole or why i don't bother with them in the first place. why wouldn't he take it on just so as to put the pride back into it? If he, Cinderella or whatever, was such a great tt specialist than I'd assume and expect of her, er, him to be doing it a favor by talking aboutt it with pride such the way Big Lance does the Tour de France. you compliment what you love to do, not down it for no reason so in conclusion, what a dummy.

any other stupid questions?

Cancellara would do well, actually they both would but I think Cancellara would win purely as he puts more time into it.

Roadhouse is stirring the pot here. I'm sure that even he knows there's no dilemma on who's better at this moment. Few years ago this would have been the duel, but after first season after comeback completed, it's clear Armstrong's TT performance is on downfall.
Based on results of last TT in 2009 TDF, Armstrong's challenger could be A. Schleck. On the other hand, I can't see who could challenge Cancellara, keeping in mind Contador isn't interested in this kind of competition (and even if he is - Cancellara is specialist, while Contador makes good TT results on his ability to recover faster after grueling stages).

I'd love to see Cancellara have a crack at the Hour record.
I think he has the attributes to give it a serious challenge.

Contador?
I'm not sure that the Hour would be his forte.

UCI ruined the hour record. Are we talking about the "athletes" hour riding a bike akin to Merckx in 1972? If we are I don't think either rider could beat Boardman's record...

I'd like to Canc ride the same type of bike used by Boardman when he broke Merckx record.

The interesting thing is that Boardman beat Merckx 1972 record, by solely concentrating on the Hour record attempt.
Boardman only managed to beat merckx record by a couple of hundred metres!

Merckx 1972 palmares for the season - when he attempted the Hour record - is simply phenomenal (won the TDF, Giro, Milan San Remo, Liege B Liege, Fleche Wallone, Giro Di Lombardia, 6 stages of the TDF, Green points jersey in the TDF.................and far to more wins in 1972 to list)

True, but thanks to the usual fcukwitts within the UCI, Boardman was of the belief upto about an hour before his attempt, that there would be a new record and he didn't have to break the mark set by Merckx. He only found out that he'd have to beat Eddy's record when he got inside the track center of the velodrome. Chris was also suffering from the condition that stopped his career, which is why this record was pretty much his last good pro ride.

^^^ I'm sure I read that Boardman wanted to set a new mark over 50km, meaning he would have to beat Merckx anyway?

LA Can't Do It

This article used to link to some wind tunnel photos that showed LA's sub-par CdA. The linked photos and articles have been removed since.

If I were to try the hour record, I would have a bike built exactly identical to that Merckx used in 1972, same weight, same materials, same geometry (if possible), etc. That is the only fair way to know if a rider today is better than the Greatest at the Hour.

This would give the prestige back to this event. And this way nobody could say you beat he record because, bla, bla, bla....

Uh, that IS what they do.

Or at least you can break the hour riding Merckx-era equipment or use modern equipment. Two different records.

Not really. Any rider attempting the record today would use a much lighter carbon bike than the machine used by Merckx in Mexico 1972.

The UCI Hour Record restricts competitors to roughly the same equipment as Merckx, disallowing time trial helmets, disc or tri-spoke wheels, aerodynamic bars and monocoque frames.

Apparently Merckx complained in 1984 when Moser rocked up on a low profile and did 51.141km. UCI weren't interested. When O'Bree started breaking the hour record at will the rules had to change..
