I removed the lower bearing (sealed and caged), took it apart to clean and grease, and lost one
ball bearing.
Is that a big problem? Will I notice the difference?
I had purchased spare bearings and wasn't worried until I figured out that I had 1" bearings instead
of 1 1/8".

I believe if you use it this way, short term (couple of days tops) you really won't do any harm. Hopefully this will be enough time to find the right size bearing and replace it??? (Aren't the bearing sizes the same for a 1" to a 1 1/8" headset anyways?!?) Bottom line, get the right size bearing and install it.
