Cantilever Brake Mounting

I have two Trek 720 hybrids, about 1996-1998 or so; steel frame/fork, very
inexpensive models. On several of them, the center pull style canitlever
brakes have a failed part. The plastic ring that is between the brake body
and the mounting post has cracked, so the spring tension is too low to pull
the brake back to center, and the brakes drag.

On the two bikes, front and rear brakes, at least three of the plastic
rings have failed. I would anticapate similar failures if I just replace the
part.

I am thinking the right appoach is to replace the whole brake assembly.
Question is: What do I replace them with? A) Has the mounting changed over
time, or will I be able to get replacement from modern parts? B) Do the
newer style linear pull brakes (if that is the right term) work with the
older levers?

Thanks for any advice.

Lots of manufacturers making good cantis. Cheapest option is probably
Tektro (model 862A) which I think start at like $15/wheel. Mounting
posts haven't changed so they'll bolt right on. The newer linear pull
v-brakes will not work properly with your canti levers.

Thanks -- I appreciate the guidance.

Nope, mounting is the same.

B) Do the

Generally not-
