I've been hearing more and more "comments and opinions" about the stability and reliability of carbon fiber bike frames and accessories lateley. I'm not sure why, but it's getting to me know. Besides the comments I've know one person that actually experienced the failure of carbon fiber. It wasn't pretty either - imagine the fork breaking without notice when your in the middle of a paceline moving at 20-plus mph. Well......is carbon fiber "ALL" it is made out to be as far as strength and reliability or is it just the fact that you can't judge when it might fail - so if your lucky everything will be ok.

Like any other material, carbon fiber is only as strong as the quality of the design/manufacture of the part. Ask around and you'll hear plenty of "comments and opinions" about the reliability of steel, aluminum, and titanium. Plenty of those have failed when people were "just riding along" too. I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it.

I own three bikes, two CF (road and MTB) and one aluminum ('dale tandem). My main ride has CF frame, CF bars, sometimes CF rims, no problems with any of them. And I've seen 50mph on that bike. Downhill, of course... In five years of riding carbon framed bikes, I have not encountered any reason to doubt the reliability of CF.
So consider this a 'comment and opinion': Carbon fiber is a terrific material with which to make cycle parts. My only complaint is that it's a bit expensive.
