Cateye Cordless 7 woes

[Jim Garrison]

New Cateye Cordless 7 (2 months old). Works flawlessly at the start
of every ride for 8-10 miles and then stops registering speed and
distance. It behaves as if it's not receiving a signal from the
sensor, as I can still cycle through the display options (i.e., it's
not totally dead, just not registering sensor signals).

It always recovers by itself after about 5 minutes of inactivity. In
other words about 5 minutes after I have finished my ride, it's back
to normal.

This happens consistently, EVERY time I go out, but never at exactly
the same distance or time. The sensor signal indicator on the display,
which toggles every wheel revolution, is always in the 'on' state
after the computer stops registering.

The batteries in both the sender and computer are brand new, and the
sensor is only 45cm from the computer, well within the 70cm spec. I've
tweaked the clearance between the spoke magnet and the sensor down to
less than 1mm, and the magnet is aligned exactly with the line on the
sensor.

Anyone have any ideas?

Mine was doing the exact same thing about a month ago.. I took it to the
LBS, the tech guy there took the unit from its mount, rubbed the contacts on
his pant legs, slapped it back on and it hasn't skipped a beat since. Try
cleaning all the contact areas with an alcohol wipe and see if that helps.

Try

Its a cordless and doesn't have any contacts.

Do you use a separate heart rate monitor? The monitor signal can
disrupt the bike computer signal.

I have a Polar 720i HRM, and a Sigma hardwire cyclometer, which takes the
same sensor as the Polar.
I place them at 180 degrees apart on opposite sides of the front wheel. No
problems with signals getting crossed.

I had one that did this. Replaced it. Same problem.
Turns out that I ride a lot on a MUP that paralells transmission lines Its
called Electro Magnetic Interference. Drives the computer batty.

Today while out riding, a couple of lightening strikes nearby caused the same
problem. ( The bikes carbon fiber, didn¹t bother it a bit.....

Cateye had/has a known problem with a lot of their transmitters doing pretty
much exactly what yours is doing. They'll replace the transmitter without
issue; just take it back to the shop you got it from and have them give
Cateye a call. Very friendly people. It's entirely possible that your
shop's never dealt with Cateye directly and may have some fear & trepidation
in doing so; if that's true, it's entirely misplaced. They'll be pleasantly
surprised.

I had the same problem, but only when the temperature dropped below ~
45F. It was a problem with my second oen, too, so I've switched away
from cordless models.

My idea is that this is exactly why I'm glad the CC-TR100 will
be wired (well, except the HRM...)

Email Cateye from their web site. I bought two of these computers from
Ebay with the same tramsmitter problem. Cateye replaced them within a
week with no questions asked.

I sent an email to Cateye yesterday about the same problem(and buying on
ebay). I was just wondering if they emailed you a response, or just sent the
transmitters with no notice.
