I just installed a PC-48 chain on my 7-speed commuting steed. When I am at a stoplight and need to backpedal slightly for cleat entry, I notice my chain binds (drops to next smaller cog). This usually while chain is on the big chainring. I have already eliminated a stiff link as a possible problem.
I know my cogset is worn at least in one set of cogs due to slippage during forward pedaling (I have ordered a new one). Would this be the cause of the binding while backpedaling or is it possibly a derailleur alignment issue?

When you backpedal while in a gear pair that does not precisely align, the chain will try to move in the direction of the rear sprocket that is in line with the front. This is normal. I have noticed that it is often more common with a new chain on a worn cassette, so you may see a reduction in the behavior when the replacement cassette is installed. -- Typoes are a feature, not a bug.
