i just noticed it recently .. the problem with it is not so much as in front pedalling but if i were to back pedal the chain is bound to drop off or to the inner chainring...

Is there some non-bizarre reason to use the large chainring in 1st gear?

The angle of the chain will cause everything to wear out faster, its also not as efficent.
