Chain Skipping Questions

Hi all - I've got a newish SRAM PG990 casette - it has about 1000 miles on
it tops. It was paired with a PC990 SRAM chain that broke last week, so I
got a new chain - they didn't have a 990 so I went down a model. It's now
skipping under load in the low gears. Normally, I will replace cassette and
chain together but I thought the cassette new enough to not have to do this.
If I put 1000 miles on the cassette and chain together would I need to
replace both together? I've been told by people that have XTR cassettes
($150+) that they replace the chain every 250-300 miles and then don't need
to replace the cassette very often.
Any advice here?

You need to find out if the chain is moving up / down to another cog, or
jumping over some teeth,
