Chain Tensioners

I was just wondering, if i was to fix a chain tensioner (the type that attatch to the front chain wheel), would I oly be able to have one gear there?

it depends on the model. I'm pretty sure DMR made some that allowed you to use all 3 chain rings. I'm not sure if they're still in production, and since they distribute in europe the shipping to the states is a doozy.
