Hello, I was wondering if anybody could offer me some advice. I have recently got into biking and bought myself a Raleigh Resonator Pro. It seemed a good low end bike for what I needed. The problem is, over the weeks i've started mixing road work with off road work and after comparison to a few friends bikes have found the lowest (granny) gear to be slightly too high for the very steep off road bits. The chainset has 28\38\48 teeth. Could anybody advise as whether I can fit a new chainset and what pitfalls\things to look out for. I've heard that Raleigh use some non-standard sizes for threads etc. Would this be an issue.?? Any advice much appreciated.

Well, a new crankset would cost you close to what the bike costs new. You'd be better served by buying a cassette that has a wider range. The bike comes with a 6-speed cluster, so that's what you need:
The "megarange" of 13-34 is as big as you're going to get. Check for compatibility before buying, as those low-end bikes sometimes have weird parts. The only other thing you may need is a new, longer chain. -- terry morse Palo Alto, CA http://bike.terrymorse.com/
hi; this crankset/chainset is prob a 110/74 (bolt circles) and the inner 28 tooth can be replaced with as small as a 24.
26 and 24 are comonly available. me personally, i'm fat- would get a smaller middle too. -that way on shallow hills you can stay on middle chainring- the 110 circle the middle uses can take a 34 or maybe a 33.

Hi, Thanks for the advice, i'd never considered just changing the inner cog instead of the whole chainset! Is 24T the lowest you can go with a 74 bolt circle? Could you go down to 22T or would this be too low. ie, 38T middle to 22T inner. I like my 38T middle cog as I can get up most hills in my area in that cog whilst still giving myself a good workout. The new inner cog is intended for some tougher stuff I've been doing offroad. If it's relevant, my rear lowest cog is 28T.

24 is the lowest you can go with 74/110 (my touring bike has this setup, 24 is pretty low, combined with a 28 on the rear). You can go lower still with the rear, using the mega-range freewheel that's mentioned. I'd try the 24 front first thou', and see if it's low enough. I can climb 7-8% grades, with 100lb bike and I weigh in at about 175. That's with the 24 front, 28 rear combo. You may have change your derailleur as well with the mega-range cassette, depending on how many teeth it can handle.
