Okay guys, first time post here...I'm excited to have found this forum.
I am an avid cyclist and have been riding for years. I had some medical problems last year, and I didn't ride nearly as much. I've got about 1,000 miles under my belt this year and am getting back in to decent shape again. Now, my sales guy at the LBS has left and I don't have anyone I trust to lean on for advice so I figured I would turn to the experts here on the forum!
I have a Specialized Tarmac S-Works SL that I had built in 2008. It has a Dura-Ace 12-27 rear cassette, and a standard 53/39 gearset up front. It is the Specialized carbon crank, with 172.5 MM crank arms. This setup is great, but with my current physical condition it is KILLING me on the hills (climbing the local canyons, etc... I love hill climbs), the 39 - 27 is just too tough on a 10% grade.
I am thinking about regearing my bike with an 11-28 Dura-Ace rear cassette and a Compact double up front (50/34). I should be able to just replace the spider and chain rings up front as opposed to buying an entire new crank...so the cost shouldn't be that bad.
Do you think this is the way to go? How will the 50 - 11 do in terms of top end compared to the 53 - 12 I currently have?
Thanks in advance for your advice.
Dan
