My commuter bike is a mid-70s bike boom Peugeot 10-speed. But for the weight, it's actually a really sweet bike, what with stout fenders, a nice ride and a good generator lighting rig. Here's the thing: the old steel cottered cranks are rusty as hell and one is slightly bent. I'd like to put a cotterless setup on there -- we're not talking Campy Record carbon, just a basic alloy set.
The thing is, the low-end Peugeot steel cranksets came with a very handy feature for commuting: there is a "pants protector" outboard of the big ring, and it really helps with not getting your trousers dirty. There used to be tons of low end bikes, like Univegas, that had cotterless cranksets with a similar type of pants-protector ring, albeit in alloy ... do they still make 'em? Where can I get such a setup, with a French BB?
Many thanks for any heads-ups.
