I've bought a set of used brakes, what can I use to clean the grime and dust off the pads? I've got brake cleaner for cleaning disc brakes and clutches on cars, will this be ok or too strong?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Assuming you're talking about disc brakes, that'll be OK.
On rim brake pads it'd be a bit excessive.

OTOH, unless there's some kind of known chemical contamination of the pads, I'd probably just settle for brushing/wiping them off.

For Road calipers, a damp paper towel may be enough "to clean the grime & dust off the (calipers &) pads" ...

  • BUT, soap & warm water would be the next option ...
  • 'I' recommend that you use EMERY CLOTH or SAND PAPER to remove any "glaze" on the braking surface -- do this when the wheel is NOT in the frame AND wipe any residue-or-grit off with a damp paper towel
