Climb Classifications

Its not necessarily a well defined art. Easiest ones to define are HC climbs. They're really long, really steep and make you want to cry just looking at the profile. Beyond that it can be hard to say. Some climbs change catagory (max on up, one down) depending on where they are placed in the stage, how many mountains before them. Basic criteria are length and gradient. The gradient has more weight to it so halving the length but doubling the steepness will probably increase the climbs catagory.

Most climbs do stay as the same cat each year. Good source of profiles is www.salite.ch which has a massive database. If you're trying to work out what catagory a climb near you is try comparing it to a TdF climb but its not an exact science.
