I am a new recreational rider and am considering switching to clipless pedals and shoes. How much improvement will I see efficiency/speed when using clipless pedals and shoes?

I have found some pedals that are combo clipless/platform? Are those recommended?

Thanks.

IMO, you will see a minimal increase in efficiency/speed, but you will have much more control over the bike. Also, you don't have to worry about foot position on the pedals, nor about your foot slipping off. As a beginner, however, you will probably suffer the dreaded slow speed fall when you forget to unclip at a stop. Usually the only injury is a bruised ego.

I recommend a combo pedal for beginners or anyone who might want to also ride in regular shoes.

In handlebar terms, I liken it to the difference between simply placing your open hands on the handlebar vs actually gripping the bar with your fingers and thumbs. Or the difference between wearing slip-on style flip flop shoes vs. lace up shoes. Which scenario would you have more control over?

I initially switched to clipless as a mountain biker, because my feet kept slipping off the pedals on rough terrain. Not having to mentally think about and physically keep your feet perfectly positioned on the pedals, allows you to concentrate on other things. I crash much less since switching to clipless, because I have more control. Years later when i began road biking, it just seemed natural to also use clipless on that bike.

All that being said, I have flat pedals on my cruiser bike because I don't want to deal with wearing special shoes for neighborhood jaunts. There is something great about jumping on a bike and just riding, without worrying about all the "accessories" of a modern cyclist.

This question has been discussed ad nauseum many times over; most recently only a few days ago. Just scroll down the first page a little and you will find a thread called "pedal advice".

I understand that these topics can do with revisiting from time to time, but not every week, surely....
