Anyone tinkering with NiCd/NiMh battery packs of the type that's used for high power headlights really needs to take this into consideration. Lead cells, if anyone is still using them, are equally capable of creating an impressive short.
Burns are bad! An old outdoorsmans trick is to carry a few pennies in a pocket with a 9v alcaline cell. The pennies cause intermittant shorts which warm the battery. The outdoorspeople would put their hands in pockets and use the warmth. :p
