College is just too expensive nowadays!

The youngsters are weak.
I worked full time, commuted, played 2 varsity sports earning an engineering degree from a "Most Competitive" school. Raced weekends. No debt. Paid it myself. Pussies.
I am glad I was able to finish my degree earlier than expected, I think during that time tuition fee is already expensive but it is even more expensive today. I am trying to help my younger brother with his tuition fees because the tuition fees had gone insanely high
No, but get your ass slammed in prison and you get free food, free medical care, a roof over your heat, no heat/electric/water/sewer bills, free education, an attorney appointed for you, free entertainment, free recreation and drugs and a free cell phone smuggled to you.
The deal gets even better if you are an illegal alien.
I would live a much higher quality of life if I took any of the free **** that I qualify for. The dumbasses in government do not look at assets, just income when determining eligibility for free ****.

If you think college is about getting an education to get a job, then you are stuck in the 1970's.
Higher education is now a high margin business. Everyone tells kids if you don't go to university you will be nothing in life. Parents don't want to be "embarrassed" by having a kid that does not go to university. What will the neighbors think if little Timmy and Sally only have a high school education, or heaven forbid get a job like in trades, how awful! That sort of non-sense is for deadbeats and immigrants.
Schools now market the "university lifestyle" which is mostly sex drugs and alcohol. Kids are pressured from the start of high school to take out massive government loans to make sure they go to university.
The government subsidizes the demand for college by giving out loans to basically anyone, without ever having the option to dissolve that debt via bankruptcy.
The price of labour within the administration of a school is MASSIVELY over-inflated thanks to unions.
We don't spend anytime teaching our kids in high school about personal finance, then expect them to make one of the largest financial decisions of their life.
Don't get me started about textbooks, that's also a high margin business. Many professors write their own texts books, and change one or two things each year. This ensures they have customers to buy their $250 texts each year, they require students to always have the latest editions. Now they are getting really smart and including an online "code" with the text that's only valid for that year. A lot of times that code was required for a program that things were graded on, there is no way around having to buy that books.
To be honest, I would say 25%-50% of the kids I went to University with had no business being there. They just were not ready. But the school always passes them because it's bad for business to fail students.
My all time favorite were the kids who complained they didn't have money to eat, or money to pay fines when they did stupid ****. BUT they always had the latest $600 smart-phone, high end designer purse, daily starbucks and bottle service on the weekend.
It's not one person or one groups fault, it's a systemic/cultural problem.

I'm making these evaluations right now as my kid is pondering colleges.
80-90% of the post secondary schools fit your description but the top schools will pay a ROI despite being overpriced, marginal utility overall. Self selection is part of it. Anyone smart and hardworking enough to get into say a top 30 school would do just fine even if their brains were not filled with socialistic mush. Neuroplasticity is a wonderful thing.

I had a position open with flexible on the night shift about 10 years ago that would have been perfect for a student. $22-24 per hour. No takers. I told the HR lady to go after a Soph or Jr Science or Engineering student. Advertised everywhere. Tons of college kids around here. I think Princeton was $34,000 tuition and the State University tuition was less than $10k then

College is a high margin business because of free money aka debt that is so easily "created" and foisted upon these unsuspecting dolts.
A community college where I am going to is only 5,000$ a year and you can transfer to any school after two years while your credits can transfer as long as you maintain a 3.0 GPA. You can save thousands of dollars and possibly get a huge scholarship when transferring as well!
I love seeing how many pampered souls think college now is like college even 5 years ago, let alone 10. I have worked very intimately on these issues, college is becoming a system of exploitation. There are many places where it hasn't been affected, but the total expenses on students as well as financial expectations has reached the point where there are not enough hours in a day for a student to do what they need to do and still get appropriate rest, leading to an increase in drug problems and drop outs. Clear as day.
I never did drugs. Looking at most engineering programs these days, they are not much different than 30+ years ago. Same ole curriculum. I lettered in 2 sports and worked 35-40 hours a week. I agree with you, there are a lot of pampered souls in Colleges who can't handle any load, so, they turn to drugs and booze.

I know what you mean, and the job market after college is even worse. Lots of new graduates, so little job opportunities available. Not to mention the student loans and other debts you may have made while still studying. It is truly a terrible time to be a student and an unemployed graduate.
