I am going to buy my dad a bike for his birthday this summer. Problem is, I can't decide what I Want to do. I have narrowed it down to a few: Scott Sub or sportster series or Trek FX or 7000 series. My delima: He used to ride a lot back in his day in the 70s and has since gotten out of it and now has neck problems, is a little more on the heavier side and is around 6'6"-6'7". IN all reality, he will only really ride on smooth, flat walking & riding trails.
No my questions for everyone:
1)which brand (I like Scott more simply because I have an S20 and love it and I don't like how Trek seems to be more of a name. I also think you get more for the $$$ with Scott...just my opinion--I want to see what you all thing)
2) whether I want a more agressive model and modify it (i.e. stem and higher handle bars) so the position isn't quite as aggressive. that way if he does get into it and continues, we can switch back to the aggressive position
All things considered, what do you think the best bet would be.

You've had good experience with your SCOTT, so there isn't a reason to look further since they have a bike model that fits what you anticipate your father's needs will be.
The ONLY (?) alternative which continues to fascinate me would be the geared version of the RALEIGH XXIX which has more robust tires (700x58) ... although the tires are designed for off-road, it also means that your father can theoretically have a cushier ride on the path than with 700x42 tires. Of course, you can fit 700x42 tires on the RALEIGH XXIX's rims, but you would be hard pressed to fit "fat" tires like that in most hybrid frames -- I'm pretty sure the rims are 622-17, so you can fit 700x28 tires (you'll need different tubes, of course) without any problem ... and, I have fit 700x25 tires in 622-17 rims, too.
